Remember who the enemy is: Catching Fire

Francis Lawrence brings us another thrilling, suspenseful, action movie. The Hunger Games Catching Fire is the second movie in the Hunger Games series and both movies are great. This film has many genres but the main ones are sci-fi and adventure, and those are my favourite genres. Francis Lawrence has directed many other movies such as I am Legend and Constantine. The lead actors of this movie are Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy and Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket. This movie was released in November 2013.

HG Catching Fire was based on the Hunger Games book series By Suzanne Collins. The plot is split into 2 parts, basically taking the victory tour, then the games. After Katniss Everdeen and her partner, Peeta Mellark won the 74th Hunger Games; they now have to go on tour, which is called the Victor’s Tour where they visit all the districts and do speeches. But before going, Katniss is visited by President Snow who fears that Katniss disobeyed him a year ago in the games when she chose to die with Peeta. President Snow tells Katniss that while she is on tour she better try to make sure that she ‘puts out the flames’ of rebellion throughout the land, or else everyone she cares about will be in danger. But when Katniss fails to do that, Snow decides to do what is known as the Quarter Quell (the right to change the Hunger Games) which is allowed to do every 25 years. He chooses to hold another version of the Hunger Games where the previous winners will compete again.

When Trinket called out the tributes Katniss was called and Haymitch was also called, but Peeta volunteered as tribute. Their mentor Heymitch thinks their best chance to survive is to form an alliance with some of the other tributes. They decide to work with Finnick and his partner, Mags. But Snow , in private is hoping that Katniss will be killed. I really enjoyed the movie with all the suspense and action.

All the actors in the film were exactly who I expected to look like. Especially Haymitch, I expected him to be all blonde with long hair. Jennifer Lawrence I thought was satisfactory with her acting how she cried and fought in the games. In the movie she wears many costumes and they do look pretty fancy, I especially like the costume she wore on her Victor’s tour; it looked superb. During the Games at the start when Peeta fought with one of the other tributes a body floated above the water, and I thought Peter died but he survived. I think Josh’s acting was a little less great than Jennifer’s.

Catching Fire is just as exciting as the first film. I like the second movie because of the arena. The arena in the first movie was more of a magical realm with godlike architects of the games. While as in Catching Fire not only do I see cool stuff outside of the arena like glittering, futuristic cities and luxury monorails, but also the arena looks much bigger and more magnificent. Although I like the first movie because the movie had more action and a much more better storyline.

The film techniques in the movie are very effective towards the story. Shaky action sequence shots help build a sense of urgency and give the effect of complete chaos. The use of close-up face shots during personal or important dialogue scenes build a strong intimacy between the viewer and the characters, and brings out the actors’ raw emotion onscreen. The shaky movement of the shots showed us the effect of the chaos in the movie. There was use of close-ups towards the face during important dialogue to show the togetherness between the viewer and the character and the emotions of the character, like when Katniss said her speech for the districts.

Hunger Games Catching Fire his my favourite HG film yet. It has all my favourite genres in it: action, thriller and adventure. It is a must see movie, and it will keep anyone entertained, and even make you cry.

Film score: 9 out of 10
